I endekati entoli – Nana Mouskouri

Nana Mouskouri sings “I endekati entoli”, a Greek song which translates to “The Eleventh Commandment”. What makes the song stand out is the collaboration of three great personalities of the Greek Music: Nikos Gatsos wrote the lyrics, Manos Hadjidakis composed the music and Nana Mouskouri performed the song.

What is the Eleventh Commandment really? We cannot know what Nikos Gatsos had in mind when he wrote the lyrics, although he gave us a few hints about it. The eleventh commandment is a spotless glass and a sharp knife.

So what is it? Obviously, it is Love. “The eleventh commandment was not so respected by you, that’s why you are still in pain.” What else could cause pain when not respected?

The only commandment that was not included in the original 10 was to Love or to Cherish Love, since this is the motivational force in our lives…who ever does not respect it, doesn’t have much hope to become happy.

However, there is also the theory that this Endekati Entoli refers to freedom of speech, freedom of living and expressing ones’ feelings.
