Min ton rotas ton ourano – Jenny Karezi

Posted on 02. Sep, 2009 in Greek Songs

Jenny Karezi sings “Min ton rotas ton ourano“, a popular Greek song which means “Don’t ask the sky”.

The song Min ton rotas ton ourano was composed by Manos Hadjidakis and is one of the most beloved songs ever played in a movie – this one being “To nisi ton gennaion” which means the Island of the Brave (men).

Lyricism, sensitivity and melancholic mood, as always in Hadjidakis’ music and songs. But this time, the composer and his lyrics have the great fortune to be sung by Jenny Karezi, one of the best Greek Actresses of movies and theatre. Many singers have performed this song; most of them with a better and more melodious voice than Karezi, but they all lack this magic touch of hers, that made her performance more theatrical than singing, and thus, unsurpassed.

It’s interesting to mention that Min ton Rotas ton ourano has known a second career, as it was sung later by Brenda Lee, becoming known all over the world with the title “All Alone Am I”. The song was recorded in an English – Greek version, with Dimitra Galani and Alkinoos Ioannidis.

Lyrics: Giannis Ioannidis
Music: Manos Hadjidakis

Min ton rotas ton ourano – English Lyrics

Word after word and we lost track of time
pain has swept us off and nightfall caught up with us
wipe the tear with your handkerchief
to drink the sun, out of your lips

Don’t ask the sky
nor the cloud and the moon
your dark gaze
has something resembling the night

All that may have come across us and all that may have distressed us
like a knife, clandestinely it struck upon us
wipe the tear with your handkerchief
to drink the sun, out of your lips

Don’t ask the sky
nor the cloud and the moon
your dark gaze
has something resembling the night
