Nanourisma – Aliki Vougiouklaki

Posted on 08. Nov, 2009 in Greek Songs

Aliki Vougiouklaki sings  ”Nanourisma” , a lovely Greek song which means “Lullaby” in English. This is one of the most tender songs ever written, and was first heard in a movie called “I neraida kai to palikari” (The fairy and the brave boy) in 1968. The song is composed by Manos Loizos and the lyrics are written by Lefteris Papadopoulos.

Nanourisma is a very popular song abroad, as English and French lyrics were written on the original music in order to create lullabys in other languages. The particular song had a second career in Greece as well, when Mariza Koch started singing it; since then major singers added this tender song to their repertoire, giving us more beautiful performances. Aliki Vougiouklaki, however, being the national star of Greece marked the song with her voice and presence; in fact this song was probably the best moment in a rather indifferent Greek movie and is still considered one of the best songs composed by Manos Loizos. For the records, Lefteris Papadopoulos wrote the lyrics for his son, who was a baby at the time.

Nanourisma – English Lyrics

I shall embroider, upon your horse’s saddle,
with a mass of diamonds,
the come-and-go of the moon
across the water of the sea.

My darling boy, my darling boy
my darling boy, let me have joy of you.

I shall embroider, upon your double-edged dagger,
that clear look of yours
out of your bright blue eyes
which I can never stare into long enough.
