O arhigos – Haris Alexiou

Haris Alexiou sings the song O arhigos, which translates to “The Captain”. It is one of the best Greek songs ever written, with lyrics by Lefteris Papadopoulos and music composed by Manos Loizos.

Despite the common belief, Haris Alexiou is not the one who originally sung this song. It was Aleka Aliberti who sung it first in Loizos’ Album “Kalimera Ilie”.

Aliberti’s voice was great, correct and perfect, but, a few years later, during the long collaboration between Alexiou and Loizos, Haris Alexiou sung the song and there was another “revelation” – as it usually happens with this woman.

Haroula Alexiou added the necessary sentiment, the loving and emotional touch that the first performance lacked. “O arhigos” became one of the most emotional songs written by Loizos and still today it is considered a song by Haroula. No wonder why, if you listen to her back then or today.

The video is taken from the “Tribute to Manos Loizos”, a concert that Alexiou gave at Herodes Atticus Odeon in Athens in 2007, a tribute to the great Greek composer and her personal friend.
